Core Eligibility Requirements
Primary Teacher Training
To apply for our Primary teacher training programme, you’ll need:
-
GCSEs in English, maths, and science at Grade C/4 or above (or recognised equivalent)
-
A UK Honours Degree at 2:2 or higher
If you don’t currently hold a GCSE in English, maths, or science, you can still apply. We accept equivalency tests from the Equivalency Testing Provider, and we’ll advise you on the best route forward.
Secondary Teacher Training
To apply for our Secondary teacher training programme, you’ll need:
-
GCSEs in English and Maths at Grade C/4 or above (or recognised equivalent)
-
A UK Honours Degree at 2:2 or higher
If your degree is not at least 50% related to the subject you’d like to teach, don’t worry – you may still be eligible. We usually ask for an AS or A-level (or equivalent) in the subject. In some cases, you may be asked to complete a Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) course before starting.
Already qualified outside the UK?
If you gained your qualifications overseas, you’ll need to show that they meet UK standards. We’ll ask for a Statement of Comparability from ENIC (European Network of Information Centres, formerly NARIC). If you’re unsure about your eligibility, get in touch and we’ll help guide you through the process.
Beyond Qualifications
While academic qualifications are important, becoming a great teacher is about so much more than grades and certificates. At Five Counties SCITT, we’re looking for people who bring passion, resilience, and a genuine desire to make a difference in young people’s lives. Teaching is a rewarding career that requires strong values, reflective practice, and the ability to build positive relationships. If you can bring these qualities, we’ll provide the training, mentoring, and support to help you grow into an outstanding teacher.
Show readiness and enthusiasm for teacher training
Have passion for teaching and strong subject knowledge
Believe in giving every child the best opportunities
Communicate clearly and build positive relationships
Can reflect, adapt, and be proactive in their approach
Experience that makes a difference
While it isn’t a strict requirement, we recommend gaining some school experience before you start your training. Spending time in a classroom can give you a real insight into what teaching is like day-to-day, help you confirm that it’s the right career for you, and give you extra confidence when you begin your training year.
Essential maths and literacy skills
All trainee teachers in England are expected to demonstrate fundamental skills in English and maths. These skills are essential to your role in the classroom and will be assessed throughout recruitment and during the programme itself. Don’t be put off if you feel less confident – our programme is designed to support your development and help you succeed.
