How the Primary with Music (5-11) SCITT programme works

The programme combines school-centred training, practical experience, and professional development in primary teaching with a Music specialism. You will complete two main school placements, working alongside experienced mentors and lead mentors who provide support, guidance, and challenge throughout the year.

Centre-based training balances educational theory with practical classroom application. You will develop teaching techniques, subject knowledge, and strategies to engage children in music and across the wider curriculum. Training includes lesson planning, assessment, inclusion, and progression to ensure you are prepared to take full responsibility for a class by the summer term.

Trainees start with small group teaching, progress to parts of lessons, then full lessons, sequences of learning, and finally whole-class responsibility. Professional learning conversations and reflection are embedded throughout to support autonomy and professional growth.

Why choose this programme?

Primary with Music is ideal for talented musicians who want to develop a career in primary teaching. You will gain specialist skills to teach music effectively, give children opportunities to sing and play instruments, and engage with live performance through partnerships with organisations like Bristol Beacon.

Distinctive features include:

  • Specialist Music training with access to performance opportunities.

  • Structured progression from small group teaching to full class responsibility.

  • Intensive school-based practice weeks for hands-on experience.

  • Strong focus on inclusion and supporting all learners.

  • Mentoring and professional support throughout the programme.

Graduates leave ready to teach in primary schools, inspire musical curiosity, and contribute to the wider school community.

Qualifications and progression

On successful completion, you will be awarded Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). You can also gain a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) with 60 Master’s level credits, delivered in partnership with Sheffield Hallam University. A QTS-only route is available on request.

The main highlight is the friendships that I have made throughout the year and the experiences within the course that we have been so lucky to do together.
