What we look for in Teacher Training candidates

At Five Counties SCITT, we’re looking for passionate, motivated people who want to make a real difference. Whether you're starting a new chapter or switching careers, if you’re eager to inspire young minds, keep learning, and bring energy and care to the classroom, teaching could be the right path for you.

Is teaching right for me? Here’s what we look for

1

An aptitude and readiness for teacher training

Training to teach is an exciting, challenging journey – and we’re looking for people who are ready to embrace it with energy and openness. You don’t need to know everything before you start, but a willingness to learn, adapt and grow is essential. Great teachers are made, not born, and having the right mindset from day one sets you up for success on your teacher training course.
2

A strong passion and subject knowledge

Whether you want to teach primary or secondary, your enthusiasm for learning should shine through. We’re looking for people who love their subject or age phase and want to share that passion with others. Strong subject knowledge helps you build confidence in the classroom, and we’ll support you to develop this further as you train.
3

A strong sense of moral purpose

Teaching is about more than just delivering lessons – it’s about changing lives. We want future teachers who are driven by a deep commitment to making a difference, especially for those who need it most. Our work is grounded in the CLF Heart Values, and we’re proud to train teachers who are ready to stand up for equity, opportunity and inclusion in every classroom.
4

Effective communication and interpersonal skills

Teachers work with people all day, every day – so being able to communicate clearly and build positive relationships is vital. We’re looking for future teachers who can listen, speak with confidence, and connect with others in a supportive and respectful way. These skills help you create a strong learning environment where pupils feel valued and understood.
5

The ability to reflect, be responsive, and proactive

No two days are the same in teaching, and being able to reflect and adapt is a huge strength. We want trainees who are open to feedback, ready to learn from their experiences, and keen to keep improving. Taking responsibility for your own progress, while seeking out support and guidance, shows a proactive attitude that will serve you well throughout your teacher training and beyond.

Fundamental Professional Skills

Before starting your teacher training, we highly recommend gaining some school experience. While not mandatory, spending time in classrooms will help you understand what teaching is really like and confirm that this career is right for you. It’s also a great way to prepare for the practical elements of our SCITT programme and hit the ground running.
