If you’re considering becoming a teacher, you’ve probably seen the term PGCE. But what does it mean? A Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) is a Master’s-level qualification that complements your practical teacher training. With Five Counties SCITT, you can work towards your PGCE while also gaining Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) – the professional award that allows you to teach in schools.
The PGCE strengthens your training by combining classroom practice with academic study which helps you understand how children learn, how effective teaching works, and how to keep developing your skills throughout your career.
Delivered in partnership with Sheffield Hallam University
We deliver our PGCE in partnership with Sheffield Hallam University (SHU), one of the UK’s largest teacher training providers. SHU is also home to the Sheffield Institute of Education, a national centre of excellence.
This partnership means you’ll train mainly in schools with Five Counties SCITT, while also accessing SHU’s expertise. You’ll benefit from university tutors, online resources, and academic support. All training takes place at the CLF Institute in Bristol, which is backed up by online webinars and tutorials.
What you’ll atudy on the PGCE
As part of the PGCE, you’ll complete two Master’s-level modules. These modules develop your skills as a reflective teacher who understands both the theory and the practice of education.
Reflecting on pedagogical approaches
In this module, you’ll explore key learning and teaching theories. You’ll analyse different approaches, test what makes learning effective, and see how strategies like talk for learning benefit pupils.
Exploring professional development
Here, you’ll focus on one area of your teaching you want to improve. Using a lesson study approach, you’ll work with colleagues to trial strategies, reflect on outcomes, and refine your practice.
Why choose the PGCE?
QTS qualifies you to teach, but the PGCE adds real value:
-
Deeper understanding of education theory – so you know why strategies work.
-
60 Master’s-level credits – which you can use towards a full Master’s later.
-
Stronger recognition – so your CV will stand out in the UK and abroad.
-
Better reflective practice – helping you keep growing as a teacher.
And the best part? There’s no extra cost. The PGCE is included in your tuition fees, with Sheffield Hallam paid directly on your behalf.
Integrated support throughout your training
What makes our programme unique is how the PGCE is fully integrated into your SCITT year. It’s not a 'bolt-on'. Every part of the PGCE connects with your school placements and real classroom experiences. This approach ensures your learning is practical, purposeful, and always focused on what benefits your pupils most.
