How the Art and Design SCITT programme works

The Art & Design SCITT programme blends school placements, centre-based training and subject-specific development. You will spend two main blocks in partnership schools across Bristol, South Gloucestershire, Bath and North East Somerset, North Somerset and Somerset, with occasional placements in Gloucestershire and Wiltshire. Mentors and Lead Mentors provide guidance, feedback, and support throughout your placements.

Teaching responsibilities develop gradually. You will start with small group sessions, progress to parts of lessons, then full lessons, and finally take complete responsibility for classes. Intensive practice weeks and professional learning conversations ensure you can connect educational theory with practical classroom teaching. Subject-specific workshops focus on Art & Design pedagogy, curriculum planning, pupil progression, and developing strong subject knowledge.

Why choose this programme?

Our Art & Design SCITT is delivered in partnership with the Five Counties SCITT and the Cabot Learning Federation. Ofsted judged our provision Outstanding in March 2024, reflecting our commitment to excellence, inclusion, and professional support.

You will benefit from:

  • A supportive and welcoming training community – we are ‘a family’.

  • School experience from the start of the programme.

  • Expert Art & Design mentors and subject specialists.

  • Inclusive practice tailored to your needs and placements.

  • Guidance and support that continues into your early career as a teacher.

This programme is designed to help you become a confident, reflective, and effective teacher who inspires pupils and fosters creativity.

Qualifications and progression

Successful completion of the programme leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and the opportunity to gain a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) with 60 Master’s level credits, delivered in partnership with Sheffield Hallam University. A QTS-only route is available on request.

Graduates of this programme move into teaching roles across the region, with opportunities to progress into subject leadership and other educational responsibilities. As an Art & Design teacher, you will have the chance to inspire creativity and encourage students to explore their full potential.
