How the Chemistry SCITT programme works

The Chemistry SCITT combines school-based placements, centre-led training, and subject-specific development. You will complete two main teaching placements across our partnership schools in Bristol, South Gloucestershire, Bath and North East Somerset, North Somerset and Somerset, with occasional placements in Gloucestershire and Wiltshire. Mentors and Lead Mentors guide your progress, offering feedback, support and challenge throughout the year.

Your teaching responsibilities build gradually. You will begin with small group teaching, progress to partial lessons, and then move on to full sequences of learning before taking full responsibility for classes. Intensive practice weeks, professional discussions, and subject workshops help you connect theory to practice. Specialist Chemistry training focuses on pedagogy, curriculum planning, and strengthening subject knowledge. You will also gain valuable Post-16 experience.

Why choose this programme?

The Chemistry SCITT is delivered in partnership with the Five Counties SCITT and the Cabot Learning Federation. Our training was judged Outstanding by Ofsted in March 2024, demonstrating our commitment to inclusion, excellence, and trainee support.

You will benefit from:

  • Early and sustained school experience.

  • Expert Chemistry mentors and subject specialists.

  • A welcoming and supportive community – we are ‘a family’.

  • Inclusive placements tailored to your individual needs.

  • Ongoing support into your early teaching career.

This programme will help you become a reflective, confident, and effective Chemistry teacher who inspires learners and promotes a love of science.

Qualifications and progression

On completion, you will be awarded Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and have the opportunity to gain a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) with 60 Master’s level credits, delivered in partnership with Sheffield Hallam University. A QTS-only route is also available on request.

Graduates from this programme move into teaching roles across the region, often progressing into subject leadership and wider school responsibilities. With Chemistry teachers in high demand, you will enjoy strong career prospects and the chance to inspire the next generation of scientists.
