How the English SCITT programme works

The English SCITT combines school-centred training with subject-specific and professional development. You will complete two teaching placements in our partner schools across Bristol, South Gloucestershire, Bath and North East Somerset, North Somerset and Somerset, with occasional placements in Gloucestershire and Wiltshire.

Each trainee is supported by a dedicated Mentor and Lead Mentor, who provide guidance, feedback, and challenge throughout the year. Your teaching responsibilities will build gradually, from small groups to whole-class teaching and eventually leading full sequences of learning. Intensive practice weeks and subject-focused sessions ensure strong links between theory and classroom practice.

Expert subject tutors deliver specialist English training, exploring pedagogy, subject knowledge, and strategies to support pupil progress across Key Stages 3–5. Centre-based sessions provide the evidence-based theory you’ll apply in school with the support of mentors and colleagues.

Why choose this programme?

The English SCITT is delivered in partnership with the Five Counties SCITT and Cabot Learning Federation, rated Outstanding by Ofsted in March 2024. Our programme is rooted in inclusive practice and exceptional support, ensuring you are well-prepared for a successful career in teaching.

Key benefits include:

  • Extensive classroom experience across the academic year.

  • Specialist English training delivered by expert practitioners.

  • Outstanding mentoring and guidance throughout.

  • Opportunities to teach across Key Stages 3–5.

  • Placements tailored to your circumstances and needs.

This programme helps you become a reflective, confident English teacher who can inspire and challenge learners.

Qualifications and progression

On successful completion, you will be awarded Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). You can also opt to gain a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) with 60 Master’s level credits, delivered in partnership with Sheffield Hallam University. A QTS-only pathway is available on request.
