How the History SCITT programme works

The History SCITT blends school-centred training with subject-specific and professional development. You will complete two teaching placements across our partner schools in Bristol, South Gloucestershire, Bath and North East Somerset, North Somerset and Somerset, with some placements in Gloucestershire and Wiltshire.

Each trainee is paired with a Mentor and supported by a Lead Mentor, ensuring regular guidance and challenge throughout the year. Teaching responsibilities grow gradually, starting with small group work and leading up to full classes and whole sequences of learning.

Centre-based training delivers research-informed theory and strategies that you apply directly during placements. Specialist History training, led by experienced practitioners, develops your subject knowledge, pedagogy, and ability to engage pupils across Key Stages 3–5.

Why choose this programme?

The History SCITT is delivered in partnership with the Five Counties SCITT and Cabot Learning Federation, judged Outstanding by Ofsted in March 2024. We pride ourselves on combining high academic standards with supportive, inclusive training.

Programme highlights include:

  • Extensive school-based experience throughout the year.

  • Specialist subject training from expert History teachers.

  • Mentoring and personalised support to build your confidence.

  • Opportunities to teach History from Key Stage 3 to Post-16.

  • A strong commitment to inclusion and wellbeing.

With this training, you’ll be prepared to make History exciting and meaningful for every student in your classroom.

Qualifications and progression

On completion, you will be awarded Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). You may also choose to gain a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) with 60 Master’s level credits, delivered in partnership with Sheffield Hallam University. A QTS-only route is available on request.

Our trainees go on to secure roles in schools across the region, with excellent opportunities for career development and progression into subject leadership.
