Primary with SEND (5-11)

The programme combines school-based placements, centre-based training, and professional development. Trainees have a ‘home’ placement for the majority of the year and a contrasting placement, typically across KS1 and KS2, giving experience in different settings.

Trainees work with experienced mentors and lead mentors who provide guidance, support, and challenge. Intensive school-based practice weeks are included, focusing on key curriculum areas and providing opportunities to link theory to practice.

Placement expectations follow a gradual progression: teaching small groups → parts of lessons → whole lessons → sequences of learning → full responsibility for classes. Trainees develop increasing autonomy and independence in planning, teaching, and assessment.

Primary with SEND is ideal for those passionate about inclusive education and supporting children who need extra help to succeed. Trainees gain specialist knowledge of SEND pedagogy, child development, and strategies to meet diverse learning needs.

Successful completion leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and the opportunity to gain a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) with 60 Master’s level credits, delivered in partnership with Sheffield Hallam University. Face-to-face training is provided at the CLF training base in Bristol, with online tutor support.
